Connect Moodle and other LMSs

Set up Moodle, a self-hosted Canvas, or another LMS that supports LTI 1.3.

Before you start

Your LMS must support LTI 1.3, including grade sync. You need administrator access to it and a CuraCourse organization owner or admin.

1. Create an activation code in CuraCourse

In CuraCourse, open your organization, choose LMS, then Create activation code. Under Add CuraCourse to your LMS, choose Other LMS.

2. Add CuraCourse with one URL

Most LMSs can add a tool from a single URL, called dynamic registration. Paste the Dynamic registration URL from the CuraCourse page into your LMS:

  • Moodle: go to Site administration → Plugins → Activity modules → External tool → Manage tools. Paste the URL into Tool URL, choose Add LTI Advantage, and then activate the tool.
  • Self-hosted Canvas: go to Admin → Developer Keys → + Developer Key → + LTI Registration, paste the URL, and choose Enable & Close. Then install the key from Settings → Apps by its client ID.

This also adds your LMS to CuraCourse, so you can skip the form on the CuraCourse page.

Or add it by hand

If your LMS can't use the URL, create an LTI 1.3 tool with the Login URL, Redirect URL, and Keyset URL from the CuraCourse page, and add the Custom parameter shown there. Turn on deep linking, grade sync, and roster access, and share user names, emails, and roles.

Your LMS then shows its own details for the tool. Copy them into the form on the CuraCourse page (Issuer, Client ID, OIDC authentication URL, Access token URL, and Platform keyset (JWKS) URL) and choose Register LMS.

These addresses must all be on your LMS's own web address and start with https://. If yours aren't, contact support.

3. Open CuraCourse once

As an instructor or administrator, open CuraCourse from a course. This connects your LMS.
