## What this block does
An Open Response Question gives students a free-form writing area. Use it for explanations, arguments, reflections, or reasoning that cannot be captured by selecting an option.

## How to use it
1. In lesson Edit mode, type **/** and choose **Open Response Question**.
2. Write the prompt, including the evidence or reasoning students should provide.
3. Configure the placeholder, word-count display, and **Disable Paste** setting as appropriate.
4. Create a rubric and add the supported assessment criteria, such as **Manual Score** or **AI Grading**. Define what earns each point.
5. Preview the response area as a learner before publishing.

## Example
Ask “Why does increasing the pendulum’s length increase its period? Refer to the model in your explanation.” Use one rubric criterion for the claim and another for the explanation.

## Grading and feedback
Writing an answer does not establish that it is correct. Use [rubric criteria](https://www.curacourse.com/help/rubrics) to assess the response. Manual-only rubrics cannot be bound to [Instant Feedback](https://www.curacourse.com/help/instant-feedback); an autogradable rubric item is required for that workflow.
